Mammoth Mountain

Overview

Mammoth Mountain is a lava dome on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada, and it skis like one: a single broad summit at 11,053 feet with bowls, chutes and ridges dropping off every side, 3,500 acres of terrain in all, and a snowfall record that in the right year embarrasses everywhere else in the United States. Dave McCoy strung the first rope tow here in the 1940s and built the resort from nothing, and it is now the flagship of Alterra's Ikon Pass and the home mountain of the US freeski and snowboard teams. The base is high, around 9,000 feet at Main Lodge, the season is long, opening in mid-November and typically closing in late May or June, and in the huge winters of 2017 and 2023 the lifts turned into August. It is five hours from Los Angeles up US 395, which explains the weekend crowds and the Southern California accent of the whole place, and the town of Mammoth Lakes at its foot is a real mountain town with a brewery, a pedestrian Village and enough restaurants to fill a week.

Getting to Mammoth is the one drawback. The drive from Los Angeles is about 307 miles and five to five and a half hours on a good day, with chain controls on 395 and the Highway 203 climb into town after a storm; Reno is 168 miles and three hours to the north; and San Francisco is six-plus hours in winter because the Tioga Pass through Yosemite is closed. Mammoth Yosemite Airport, fifteen minutes from town, has semi-private Advanced Air flights from Hawthorne (with a free LAX shuttle) and Carlsbad from late November to late April, and Bishop Airport, 45 miles south, has had United winter service from Denver and San Francisco in recent seasons. Once you arrive you can put the car away: free town and mountain shuttles connect every base lodge, the Village and the Tamarack cross-country centre.

Terrain & Snow

The mountain reads from the top down. The Panorama Gondola and Chair 23 serve the summit, and from there the volcano falls away into the terrain Mammoth is known for: Cornice Bowl, the wide, steep signature face entered from Upper Road Runner through Hangman's Hollow; Climax, the open bowl straight under the gondola with cliff bands to thread; the Paranoid Flats chutes, "the Noids", off Chair 23; Dragon's Back, a steep chute that funnels into bowl skiing on the far skier's left; and Wipe Out and Drop Out either side of 23. The Hemlocks give tree-and-bowl skiing when the summit is on wind hold, which is often, because an exposed 11,000-foot volcano catches every gust that crosses the Sierra crest. Below the steeps, the middle mountain is a huge spread of blue groomers and gladed pockets off Chairs 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10, with roughly 65 percent of the terrain facing north and holding snow through spring. Mammoth quotes its terrain mix as about 15 percent beginner, 26 percent intermediate, 22 percent advanced and 37 percent expert and double-black.

Then there are the parks. The Unbound Terrain Parks are among the most extensive in North America: ten parks, two halfpipes including a 22-foot superpipe, more than a hundred jibs and up to fifty jumps in a big year, headquartered at Unbound Main beside Main Lodge. This is the official training ground of the US Freeski and Snowboard teams, Shaun White is a part owner, Chloe Kim trains here, and the park crowd on a sunny March afternoon is the best free show in California skiing. Snowfall averages 400 inches a season at the base by the resort's own count, or a more conservative 337 inches by independent tallies, and the variance is enormous: 2022/23 delivered around 700 inches at the base and nearly 900 at the summit and the mountain stayed open until 6 August, while a lean season like 1976/77 managed 94 inches. Recent winters have been middling, with 297 inches and a 7 June closing in 2025/26, and 286 inches the year before. Even so, visitors report that Mammoth's high base and north-facing terrain keep it skiing well into May almost every year, long after Tahoe has shut.

Beginners and Families

For a mountain with this much expert terrain, Mammoth is unexpectedly kind to learners, because it has three separate base areas and puts the gentle stuff where the families are. Eagle Lodge, next to the Juniper Springs condos, is the quiet family base with a learning centre and easy terrain; Canyon Lodge sits in town at the top of the free Village Gondola and has its own ski school and beginner slopes plus the best après; and Main Lodge has the Sesame Street and Discovery learning zones beside the Panorama Gondola. Mammoth Child Care in the Village takes kids from two to six. Woolly's Tube Park, on the shuttle line between the Village and Main Lodge, has lift-served tubing lanes and a snow play area, and the resort's lift-and-lodging bundles let children twelve and under ski free, which for a family of four changes the arithmetic considerably. The mid-mountain blues are wide and well groomed, and a progressing intermediate can spend days off Chairs 1, 2 and 10 without going near the summit.

When to Go

Opening day for 2026/27 is Friday 13 November 2026, with the traditional banner breakthrough at the Broadway Express, and closing is a moving target that depends on the snow: late May is normal, mid-June is common, and August has happened twice in the last decade. December and January bring the coldest snow and the most Los Angeles weekend traffic; a midweek January trip on the resort's promotional $99 dates is the value play. February and March are peak powder months with longer days, and the classic Mammoth move is a spring trip in April or May, when the park is at its best, the Canyon Lodge après parties are in full swing, the sun is strong at 9,000 feet, and the north-facing bowls are still holding winter snow at the top. Summit lifts and the gondola go on wind hold regularly all season; plan for it rather than being surprised.

Altitude and the Volcano

Mammoth Lakes sits at about 7,900 feet, Main Lodge at roughly 9,000 and the summit above 11,000, higher than almost any other American resort town, and visitors coming straight from sea level in Los Angeles feel it. Drink water, take the first day easy and go steady on the brewery. The mountain is an active volcanic feature: a fenced fumarole near Chair 3 vents carbon dioxide and is strictly off limits, and the resort has had avalanche-control tragedies on Lincoln Mountain above Canyon Lodge in recent seasons, which is a sobering reminder that this is real mountain terrain with real hazards.

Lift Tickets & Pricing

Window prices for a single adult day at Mammoth run from about $149 on the quietest dates to $269 in peak holiday weeks, and nobody who plans ahead pays them. Advance online tickets start around $89, pre-season pricing cuts 22 to 50 percent off single days, multi-day tickets take up to 30 percent more off, and a four-day Quad Pack works out around $115 a day for adults and $58 for kids. The resort runs a $99 adult midweek promotion on selected January dates (11 to 14, 19 to 21 and 25 to 28 January 2027 this season). Mammoth is an Ikon Pass mountain with unlimited, reservation-free access on the full pass, priced at $1,399 for 2026/27 ($1,349 for renewals), with the Ikon Base at $949 and session passes from $299; pass holders get 25 percent off friends-and-family day tickets and up to 40 percent off resort-owned lodging. A Mammoth lift ticket is valid the same day at June Mountain, the mellow sister resort twenty minutes up the road. Lifts run 8:30 to 4:00 daily. Where to Stay

Where you sleep in Mammoth decides how you get to the lifts. The Village at Mammoth is the pedestrian hub with the free gondola to Canyon Lodge and most of the bars; the Main Lodge area has one ski-in, ski-out hotel and nothing else at 9,000 feet; the Eagle Lodge side has the slopeside condos; and the town itself, along Main Street and around Old Mammoth Road, has motels, lodges and the best-value beds, all on the free shuttle.

Dining

Mammoth eats better than most American ski towns because it is a town first. On the mountain the food is lodge cafeteria fare with a few standouts and a summit café with the best view in California; in town there is a Nordic fine-dining room, a lakeside restaurant in a 1920s lodge, a brewery with a gastropub kitchen and a chef's place in the Village that does breakfast through dinner.

Events

The season starts with the Opening Day party on 13 November 2026, with Woolly the mammoth mascot and a first-chair banner breakthrough at Broadway Express. Mammoth has hosted the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix halfpipe and slopestyle World Cup stops and the Rev Tour in many recent seasons, though the 2026/27 Grand Prix calendar was pointing to Aspen when we researched this guide, so check the US Ski and Snowboard schedule before planning around it. The Canyon Lodge après parties run Friday and Saturday afternoons with a DJ at the Lincoln Bar, and the annual Pond Skim at Canyon Lodge in April is the spring highlight when conditions allow (the 2026 edition was cancelled for lack of snow). The Mammoth Invitational, the community foundation's celebrity-and-pro fundraiser, is being reworked and was not held in its traditional form this year. In summer the town hosts the Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza and the mountain becomes one of the biggest bike parks in the country.

Plan Your Mammoth Trip

Mammoth is the pick for skiers and riders who want big-mountain terrain, world-class parks and a long, sunny season on a high base, and for anyone in Southern California who is willing to drive five hours for it. Families do well at Eagle and Canyon Lodge; experts should ski the summit early before the wind, then work the Hemlocks and Chair 23 when it closes. Buy tickets online in advance or bring an Ikon Pass, avoid holiday weekends if you can, come in April for the park and the après, drink water on day one, and check the 395 chain controls before you leave Los Angeles.
